US Aircraft Carrier USS Gerald R. Ford Enters Red Sea with Destroyers

(MENAFN) The US aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford has returned to the Middle East after passing through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea, accompanied by destroyers USS Mahan and USS Winston S. Churchill, according to a US official cited by a media outlet.

As stated by reports, the carrier had earlier left the Croatian port of Split in early April following a brief stop for scheduled repairs and resupply after a fire broke out on board on March 12 in the ship’s laundry and berthing areas. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

The ship now joins the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is operating in the northern Arabian Sea, giving the United States two carrier strike groups in the region. A third carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, is also en route and expected to arrive by the end of the month, potentially bringing three carrier strike groups into simultaneous operations in the area.

According to reports, the USS Gerald R. Ford has been deployed at sea since June and has already set a record for the longest continuous carrier deployment since the Vietnam War, following earlier operations in the Caribbean before being reassigned to the Middle East.

The Pentagon and US Central Command have not yet publicly confirmed the deployment details.

The carrier’s return comes at a time of ongoing diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
