Iranian Forces Target US Ships After Cargo Vessel Seized
(MENAFN) Iranian forces deployed drones against American vessels in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday following a confrontation in which US troops boarded an Iranian-flagged cargo ship, according to local media reports.
A semi-official news agency reported that the drone assault was launched in direct response to US forces boarding the container vessel TOUSKA. The report did not clarify whether the American ships targeted were military or civilian in nature.
Prior to the drone strikes, Iranian authorities had already acknowledged the seizure of the TOUSKA by US forces and vowed to retaliate "soon," characterizing the boarding as a breach of a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire that took effect on April 7 and has largely remained intact since.
Another semi-official Iranian outlet cited the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters as stating that US forces had deliberately targeted the vessel, knocked out its navigational systems, and subsequently stormed it — actions Tehran described as a ceasefire violation.
Vessel tracking data indicates the TOUSKA had set sail from Port Klang, Malaysia, on April 12.
Iranian military spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari stated that American forces opened fire on the ship before conducting the boarding operation.
The incident was first disclosed publicly by US President Donald Trump on Sunday. US Central Command (CENTCOM) later confirmed that the USS Spruance had intercepted the Iranian-flagged cargo ship after it allegedly attempted to breach a US naval blockade in the Gulf of Oman. CENTCOM added that Marines remain in control of the vessel, which was en route to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas.
Supporting footage released by CENTCOM on X — the US-based social media platform — showed an American warship issuing a warning to the TOUSKA before firing upon it.
Zolfaghari condemned the operation in stark terms, stating: "the aggressive United States, by violating the ceasefire and engaging in maritime piracy, attacked one of Iran's vessels after disabling its navigation system."
He further alleged that US troops had stormed the ship by deploying "a number of terrorist marines" onto it.
"We warn that Iran's military forces will soon respond to and retaliate against this armed act of piracy by the US military," he said.
