Moderate Earthquake Strikes Northern Sumatra


(MENAFN) A 5.8-magnitude tremor shook the northern region of Sumatra, Indonesia, in the early hours of Sunday, as reported by the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.

The seismic event, recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), took place at 3:06 a.m. (2006 GMT Saturday) in an area recognized for frequent tectonic activity due to shifting plates beneath the Earth's surface.

Its epicenter was located at approximately 1.29 degrees north latitude and 97.21 degrees east longitude, placing it within a zone known for geological instability.

Authorities have indicated that there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to buildings and infrastructure following the quake.
