Ex-COP Leader Says Climate is Central to Geopolitics Policy

(MENAFN) Former COP30 President Andre Aranha Correa do Lago said that climate issues have become fully integrated into global politics, energy discussions, and international policy frameworks, moving far beyond being treated as a specialized or isolated topic, according to reports.

Speaking during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, he explained that even debates on conflicts in regions such as the Middle East increasingly include environmental and climate-related dimensions. He noted that issues such as war, agriculture, and justice are now closely interconnected with climate considerations, even when the topic is not explicitly mentioned.

He stated that in modern diplomacy, climate factors are effectively embedded in nearly all major discussions, whether or not they are directly referenced in meeting agendas.

Correa do Lago also outlined what he sees as essential criteria for the success of future Conference of the Parties (COP) negotiations. These include producing measurable progress in climate talks, delivering outcomes that improve public well-being, and ensuring results that are meaningful for the private sector.

He added that civil society expectations must also be addressed, while both developed and developing nations should be able to view COP outcomes as constructive and beneficial.

Looking ahead to future climate summits, including one expected to be hosted by Türkiye, he emphasized the importance of preparation during the host country’s presidency period.

On the issue of fossil fuels, he noted that discussions have already produced international consensus on transitioning away from them, referring to agreements reached at earlier climate conferences, according to reports.

He suggested that upcoming COP meetings are expected to expand into new areas of climate cooperation and policy development, while also stressing that host countries will need to engage in internal policy dialogue to define their contributions effectively.
