Putin Directs Government to Develop National AI Plan
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday directed his government to draft a comprehensive national roadmap for the deployment of artificial intelligence across the country's economy, public institutions, and defense apparatus — declaring that Russia's ability to master the technology is inseparable from its long-term survival as a sovereign state.
Speaking at a dedicated government meeting on AI development, Putin called for sweeping acceleration in the integration of the technology across virtually every sector of Russian society, including public administration, education, healthcare, logistics, and national security. He also stressed the strategic importance of promoting domestically developed Russian AI solutions on the global stage.
"Artificial intelligence, along with digital platforms and autonomous systems, is shaping a fundamentally new image of the economy, social relations, the social sphere, education, healthcare, logistics and industry, defense and security — and indeed the entire life of the country," Putin said.
The Russian leader issued a pointed warning that falling behind in the global AI race carries consequences far beyond economic competitiveness — framing technological self-reliance as a matter of national existence.
"We must possess the most advanced technologies and rely on fully sovereign domestic products," he stressed.
Putin devoted particular attention to the rapid evolution of large language models and neural networks, highlighting what he described as their growing capacity for independent reasoning and action — a development he suggested demands urgent national attention.
"These artificial intelligence agents are already approaching a new level of independence. They are learning to plan their actions, evaluate the results they achieve, and interact with people and the real world," he said.
