No Winners If This War Continues, Says Qatari Foreign Ministry Spokesperson

As the deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz and make a deal to end the war, now on its Day 39, looms, Qatar has said the if this conflict continues for longer, there would be winners.

Trump has given Tehran until 8pm in Washington (midnight GMT and 3.30am in Tehran) to agree to a deal the is acceptable to him, he said during a recent news conference, stressing that Iran can never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Comments made by the Qatar's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson comes as air defences across the region continue to respond to Iranian aerial attacks that Tehran says are in response for US and Israeli strikes on Iran since February 28, 2026.

"We are close to the point where the situation in the region could spiral out of control," the Qatari spokesperson added.

Doha has reiterated that it was not mediating in efforts between the US and Iran, but it supports Pakistan-led mediation efforts to build bridges and end the war.

Stressing the importance of opening the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed by Iran, the Qatari spokesperson said: "Hormuz is a natural strait, not a canal, and all countries in the region have the right to use it freely."

"It is too early now to talk about financial mechanisms relating to the operation of the Strait of Hormuz in the future. "We need the Strait to open first," he added.

Call between Qatar, Iran FMs

On Monday, Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi, that a diplomatic solution is the only way to resolve the ongoing regional crisis.

Sheikh Mohammed told Araqchi in a phone call that Qatar rejects the continued targeting by Iran of his country and other countries in the region, according to a statement by the Qatari foreign ministry.
