China Links Rubio Sanctions to Senate Record Ahead of Trump Trip

(MENAFN) China stated on Monday that the sanctions imposed on US Secretary of State Marco Rubio are connected to his actions and statements during his tenure as a senator.

“China’s sanctions were aimed at Mr Rubio’s China-related words and deeds when he served as a senator,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing.

The announcement coincides with plans for Rubio to potentially accompany US President Donald Trump on a trip to China later this month.

According to reports, Beijing first sanctioned Rubio and ten other American individuals in August 2020, a move widely seen as retaliation in response to US measures targeting Hong Kong. These US measures had sanctioned Hong Kong officials after the implementation of the national security law in the region, following widespread protests in 2019.

Although the White House confirmed Trump’s visit to Beijing on March 31, Chinese authorities have not yet disclosed specific arrangements, stating that communications with the US are ongoing. During this two-day visit – the first since Trump returned to office last year – the president is expected to limit his itinerary exclusively to the Chinese capital.
