U.S. Resolved to Crush Iranian Threats, Hegseth Says
(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reaffirmed Washington's unwavering commitment to neutralizing Iranian threats and safeguarding American lives overseas on Saturday, as a sweeping joint military offensive between the United States and Israel sent shockwaves across the Middle East.
The Pentagon chief took to X — the American social media platform — to announce the launch of a large-scale aerial campaign authorized by President Donald Trump.
"Overnight, on President (Donald) Trump's orders, the Department of War commenced Operation Epic Fury — the most lethal, most complex, and most-precision aerial operation in history," Hegseth wrote.
The operation, jointly executed by Washington and Tel Aviv, was described by Trump as a calculated move to cripple Tehran's military infrastructure and eliminate the threat posed by Iran's nuclear ambitions. The US president simultaneously called on ordinary Iranians to seize control of their own government once the strikes end.
Tehran responded swiftly and aggressively — launching drones and missiles toward Israeli territory while targeting American military installations across Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar.
Hegseth went further, accusing Iran of nearly five decades of aggression against US interests and citizens, alleging the regime has relentlessly pursued weapons of mass destruction to advance what he described as a radical agenda.
"We will not tolerate powerful missiles targeting the American people. Those missiles will be destroyed, along with Iran's missile production. The Iranian navy will be destroyed," he added.
Reinforcing Trump's position, Hegseth declared that Iran would never acquire a nuclear weapon under Washington's watch.
"The United States did not start this conflict, but we will finish it. If you kill or threaten Americans anywhere in the world — as Iran has — then we will hunt you down, and we will kill you," he added.
