Erdogan Voices Turkey’s Deep Concern Over US-Israeli Attacks on Iran
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Saturday that the Middle East could be drawn into a “ring of fire” after coordinated American and Israeli military operations against Iran.
Speaking at an event in Istanbul, Erdogan said Türkiye feels “deep sorrow” and serious concern over the attacks, which he described as having “began with provocations by (Israeli Premier) Netanyahu.”
He strongly criticized the joint operation, saying it “clearly violate Iran's sovereignty and threaten the peace of the friendly and brotherly Iranian people.”
At the same time, Erdogan underlined that Tehran’s retaliatory actions were also unacceptable.
"Regardless of the reason, we consider Iran's missile and drone attacks on our brotherly countries in the Gulf unacceptable,” he stressed.
Warning of broader consequences, Erdogan said that unless restraint and dialogue prevail, “our region faces the risk of being dragged into a ring of fire,” Erdogan warned.
He called for swift collective action to prevent further escalation. “To prevent further bloodshed and spare our region from greater suffering, all actors—especially the Islamic world— must take urgent action,” said Erdogan.
The Turkish leader added that Ankara would intensify diplomatic initiatives without delay, prioritizing efforts to secure a ceasefire before working to return the parties to negotiations.
The latest strikes by Israel and the United States on Iran took place early Saturday, with Washington and Tel Aviv citing alleged threats from the “Iranian regime” as justification.
The military action unfolded while US-Iran negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program were still underway through Omani mediation. A recent round of talks held in Geneva concluded on Thursday.
The renewed hostilities follow last June’s 12-day conflict initiated by Israel against Iran, during which the United States later joined the campaign and carried out airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.
