Brazil Flood Death Toll Rises To 55, 13 Missing

Brasilia: The death toll from floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in southeastern Brazil has risen to 55, authorities said, with 13 people still missing.

The fire department in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais said the flooding, caused by torrential downpours, has displaced more than 5,000 people from their homes, after landslides struck several areas affected by the severe weather.

Brazil has been grappling with a growing number of extreme weather-related disasters, which scientists attribute to climate change.

Last year, unprecedented flooding in southern Brazil killed more than 200 people and affected about two million others, in one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history.
