UNHCR Urges Transparency Due to Deadly Shipwreck

(MENAFN) The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) expressed deep concern on Wednesday following a tragic shipwreck off Chios island, Greece, in which at least 15 people died and 24 others were injured, including children, women, and men.

While the exact circumstances of the accident remain under investigation, UNHCR called for “full clarity and transparency” in incidents occurring during lifesaving operations at sea. The agency emphasized that such tragedies are not isolated, noting that between 2015 and 2025, at least 3,148 people died or went missing in the Aegean Sea while attempting to cross.

UNHCR staff are currently assisting survivors at local hospitals, providing interpretation and legal services where necessary. The agency stressed that these incidents are preventable, urging governments to tackle the root causes of forced migration, increase support for countries hosting refugees, and create more legal pathways for migration.

“Saving lives at sea is a legal and humanitarian imperative,” UNHCR said, calling for coordinated international action to prevent further deaths and ensure the safety of vulnerable populations attempting perilous journeys.
