Gaza Civil Defense Stops Recovering Bodies Amid Fuel Shortage
(MENAFN) Gaza's Civil Defense announced Tuesday it has suspended retrieval of Palestinian fatalities from Israel's prolonged military offensive, citing catastrophic fuel depletion triggered by Israeli restrictions that have paralyzed humanitarian operations.
The agency disclosed in a Tuesday statement that its fleet has been grounded after fuel reserves dropped beneath the threshold required for essential relief work, compelling personnel to abandon body recovery efforts.
Officials further cautioned that emergency response teams cannot address urgent distress calls amid current weather conditions.
"As teams are unable to reach affected areas due to the fuel shortage."
The development follows Israel's failure to honor humanitarian obligations outlined in the ceasefire accord implemented since Oct. 10, which explicitly requires fuel deliveries, humanitarian supplies, and debris-clearing machinery to enter Gaza.
The agency appealed to global institutions and relief organizations to immediately supply fuel for operating emergency vehicles and apparatus, enabling teams to maintain critical services.
The alert arrives despite the truce advancing into its second phase in January, while Israel persistently breaches the agreement almost daily, producing Palestinian civilian fatalities.
Israeli forces seized control of the Palestinian-administered Rafah crossing in southern Gaza during May and intensified blockade measures, permitting only minimal fuel quantities and humanitarian resources into the enclave, deteriorating humanitarian circumstances.
The checkpoint resumed operations Monday under stringent Israeli limitations, though Palestinians returning from Egypt documented abuse and intimidation throughout passage.
Israel launched its military operation in Gaza with U.S. backing in October 2023. The conflict has claimed approximately 72,000 Palestinian lives and injured over 171,000 individuals, predominantly women and children, while obliterating roughly 90% of Gaza's civilian infrastructure.
