Slovakia's Security Chief Steps Down Over Link to Epstein Files

(MENAFN) Slovakia's national security adviser Miroslav Lajcak has stepped down after his name surfaced in documents tied to deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Prime Minister Robert Fico confirmed Saturday.

Fico revealed through a Facebook video that he approved Lajcak's voluntary resignation, noting his adviser personally initiated the departure amid mounting scrutiny over the explosive revelations.

The controversy erupted when the US Department of Justice released a massive trove of Epstein-related files naming multiple prominent individuals. Lajcak, Slovakia's former foreign minister, appeared among those referenced in the communications.

When Slovak outlet 360-tka first reached him for comment, Lajcak rejected any connection, expressing confusion about his name's appearance in the materials. He later told Slovak a news agency he couldn't verify the messages' legitimacy given the elapsed time, characterizing any potential interaction as casual and devoid of meaningful substance.

Lajcak subsequently issued a statement declaring his intention to personally address the prime minister and tender his resignation. He emphasized the decision stemmed not from wrongdoing or ethical lapses, but rather to shield Fico from political fallout over an issue disconnected from governmental operations.

In his recorded remarks, Fico praised Lajcak as a seasoned diplomatic professional, lamenting the loss of valuable foreign policy knowledge. He simultaneously blasted news organizations for sensationalizing the resignation through misleading coverage.

According to Actuality.sk, both opposition members and coalition partners had demanded Lajcak's removal in preceding days.
