EU investigates into Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok, X

(MENAFN) The European Union has opened a formal probe into Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok and the recommendation systems used by X under the Digital Services Act, focusing on concerns related to sexualized imagery, according to an announcement made Monday.

Authorities confirmed that a new investigation has been initiated against X under the DSA, while an earlier probe that began in December 2023 has been expanded to further examine whether the platform is meeting its obligations regarding risk management tied to its recommendation algorithms.

“The new investigation will assess whether the company properly assessed and mitigated risks associated with the deployment of Grok's functionalities into X in the EU,” the statement said.

It added that the assessment covers dangers linked to the spread of illegal material within the EU, “such as manipulated sexually explicit images, including content that may amount to child sexual abuse material.”

The statement stressed that such risks appear to have already occurred, potentially exposing people across the EU to serious harm.

Grok, X’s AI-powered chatbot, has recently faced backlash following a social media trend in which users asked the system to alter or create explicit images of individuals without their consent.

Musk, whose company xAI developed Grok, said on Jan. 3 that users requesting the creation of illegal material would be handled as though they had personally uploaded illegal content themselves.
