Police force cuts get labeled as “distressing and triggering”
(MENAFN) Plans to reduce the number of police forces in England and Wales have been described as "deeply distressing and triggering" by a mother whose son died in a car crash.
Jacob Crawshaw, 19, from St Neots, Cambridgeshire, was killed in October 2021 when the van he was traveling in crashed on the A14 in Northamptonshire. A retired detective constable is now facing gross misconduct proceedings over his handling of the investigation.
Responding to proposals that could shrink the number of forces from 43 to 12, Tracey Crawshaw said reforms were needed to "restore trust with communities who have lost faith."
Ministers argue that the current model is overly bureaucratic, wastes money, and shows inconsistent performance across England. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is set to announce a consultation on plans to "significantly" reduce the number of forces, following calls by police chiefs to create 12 “mega forces.”
Mahmood is expected to emphasize that these larger forces should prioritize serious and organized crime, along with complex cases such as murder and drug offences. Each borough, town, and city would be part of a Local Policing Area, with officers focusing on neighbourhood policing.
