Netanyahu's office agrees to a restricted reopening of Rafah Crossing

(MENAFN) Israeli authorities announced late Sunday that they have accepted a proposal allowing a restricted reopening of the Rafah Crossing, tied to a broader peace initiative for Gaza put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to an official statement, the crossing would resume operations in a limited form and only for pedestrian movement. The decision is part of a 20-point framework and would be implemented under strict Israeli oversight and inspection procedures. The statement explained the terms as follows: "As part of President Trump’s 20-point plan, Israel has agreed to a limited reopening of the Rafah Crossing for pedestrian passage only, subject to a full Israeli inspection mechanism. The reopening of the crossing was conditioned upon the return of all living hostages and a 100% effort by Hamas to locate and return all deceased hostages."

The statement further indicated that the reopening would not take place until the search for the remains of Israeli soldier Ran Gvili is concluded.

Israel has kept the Palestinian side of the Rafah Crossing completely shut since May 2024, during its prolonged military campaign in the Gaza Strip. Since October 2023, the offensive has resulted in the deaths of more than 71,400 people, the majority of them women and children.

In recent months, Israeli officials have repeatedly tied any reopening of the crossing to the recovery of the last remaining captive’s body from Gaza. Rafah, which serves as a critical link between Gaza and Egypt, had been scheduled to reopen in October during the first stage of a ceasefire agreement that came into force on October 10. That provision, however, was not implemented.

Following the start of the ceasefire, Palestinian factions released 20 Israeli captives alive and returned the bodies of 27 others. The remains of Gvili have not yet been recovered.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli genocide have continued, with hundreds of reported violations. These actions have led to the murdering of at least 484 Palestinians and injuries to 1,321 others, according to health authorities.
