Migrants die as boat sinks in central Mediterranean

(MENAFN) Nearly 50 migrants are believed to have lost their lives after a boat went down in the central Mediterranean, according to reports based on testimony from a survivor.

As stated by reports, Malta’s military authorities said a single man was pulled from the sea by a commercial cargo ship near the Tunisian coast on Friday. He was later transported to Malta, where he received medical care.

"Authorities confirm that one survivor was rescued to Malta. According to him, 50 people did not survive. The people started from Tunisia and spent 24 hours in the water," an independent migrant support organization also confirmed in a statement shared on a US-based social media platform.

Earlier this month, the same group indicated that roughly 150 individuals had disappeared in the central Mediterranean following incidents involving at least three boats that departed from Tunisia. It remains unclear whether the vessel involved in the latest tragedy is connected to those earlier reports of missing migrants.
