China opens investigation into top general Zhang Youxia
(MENAFN) China’s Defense Ministry announced on Saturday that it has launched an investigation into General Zhang Youxia, one of the country’s highest-ranking military officials.
Zhang, 74, who serves as vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and is a member of the Communist Party’s Politburo, is suspected of “serious violations of discipline and law,” according to the ministry. Another senior CMC official, Liu Zhenli, is reportedly under investigation on similar charges.
Zhang joined the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in 1968 and remained in office past China’s usual military retirement age.
Some international reports have suggested that Zhang may have leaked sensitive information regarding China’s nuclear program to foreign parties and accepted substantial bribes in exchange for promotions. These allegations have not been confirmed by Beijing.
