Minnesota Governor Urges Removal of Federal Immigration Agents

(MENAFN) Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Sunday appealed to the Trump administration to withdraw nearly 3,000 federal immigration officers sent to the Minneapolis-St. Paul region following the deadly shooting of American Alex Pretti by a U.S. Border Patrol agent. The deployment came after escalating tensions related to federal immigration enforcement actions.

At a press briefing, Walz stressed that the incident was a critical moment for the country, saying, “I don't care if you are conservative and you are flying a Donald Trump flag, you're a Libertarian 'don't tread on me,' you're a Democratic Socialist of America, this is an inflection point, America,” in reference to the killing of the 37-year-old.

Walz argued that the shooting could not be justified, pointing to video footage that he said shows Pretti did not assault federal agents — contradicting assertions made by President Donald Trump, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, FBI Director Kash Patel and U.S. Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino about Pretti’s actions.

The governor described Pretti as highly respected by his loved ones, emphasizing that he was “beloved by his family” and was an exemplary citizen — “an accomplished ICU nurse, skillful in ability to work with veterans, someone who's beloved by the community, (had) no criminal record, (and a) lawful firearms owner.”

Multiple witness videos reportedly challenge the federal government’s version of events. In those recordings, Pretti is seen assisting a female protester who had been knocked down by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. The footage later shows a federal agent using pepper spray on Pretti, followed by agents subduing him. One agent is seen taking a legally owned firearm from him before another agent fired several shots.

Walz went on to address the widely shared visual material, telling audiences, “And you know what you saw,” referencing the footage viewed by millions that has sparked public outrage and intensified scrutiny of the fatal encounter.
