U.S. South Carolina Reports Dramatic Surge in Measles Cases

(MENAFN) South Carolina health authorities reported a dramatic spike in measles infections Tuesday, with at least 88 new cases driving the state's confirmed total to 646.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health disclosed that 538 individuals are currently under quarantine, while an additional 33 remain in isolation as officials scramble to halt the outbreak's spread.

A minimum of 15 elementary, middle, and high schools now have students quarantined. Clemson University and Anderson University collectively reported 88 students in quarantine.

This epidemic unfolds as measles infections climb nationwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 2,242 measles cases were documented across 44 states throughout last year—the highest yearly figure in over three decades. Through 2026 thus far, 171 cases have emerged across nine states.

Vaccination coverage throughout the nation remains insufficient to achieve community immunity in numerous regions. Public health authorities indicate measles immunization rates have dropped from pre-pandemic benchmarks and haven't fully rebounded, fueling heightened transmission and disease clusters.

Measles represents an extremely contagious viral infection transmitted through airborne particles, capable of triggering severe complications—including pneumonia, brain inflammation, and fatality—especially among young children.

Even with access to a safe and effective vaccine, an estimated 95,000 people—predominantly children under age 5—succumbed to measles in 2024, according to the World Health Organization.

Health authorities persistently emphasize that vaccination constitutes the most powerful defense against measles infection and outbreaks, particularly in low-income and conflict-stricken nations where immunization access is limited.
