‬NIO EL8‭ Review: Inside The ‬Full-Size Electric Crossover SUV

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)

Chinese manufacturers are reshaping the automotive market in the UAE and globally with affordable‭, ‬practical vehicles‭. ‬Standing apart is NIO‭, ‬a luxury brand from the East offering elegant design‭, ‬a multitude of features‭, ‬and full-fat pricing aimed at premium buyers‭. ‬Today‭, ‬we take a closer look at its flagship‭, ‬the 2025‭ ‬NIO EL8‭ ‬full-size electric crossover SUV‭, ‬featuring a trick‭ ‬“charging”‭ ‬method‭.‬

D ESIGN AND AESTHETICS

The NIO EL8‭ ‬is more of an MPV-style crossover than a rugged SUV‭, ‬defined by a minimalist design‭. ‬From the signature X-Bar front‭ ‬bumper and shark-nose profile‭, ‬fluid lines flow from the bonnet through the body to the tailgate‭, ‬creating smooth‭, ‬seamless contours‭. ‬It's very much the iPhone of vehicles‭. ‬Slim DRLs sit like brows above the separate Smart Matrix LED headlights‭, ‬which intelligently‭ ‬bend light around oncoming traffic‭. ‬Flush door handles aid aerodynamics‭, ‬helping achieve a drag coefficient of just 0.25‭.‬

The EL8‭ ‬rides on sporty forged 22-inch wheels‭, ‬though a classier multi-spoke design would better suit its limo-like positioning‭.‬‭ ‬A subtle standout is the‭ ‬“cat-ear”‭ ‬roof module housing cameras and LiDAR‭, ‬evoking a hint of Daredevil‭, ‬and contributing to its 33‭ ‬integrated cameras and sensors‭. ‬At the rear‭, ‬the design remains clean and sleek‭, ‬with a slim full-width light bar and a cleverly concealed rear wiper‭.‬

Its imposing presence comes from its size‭: ‬5,099‭ ‬mm long‭, ‬2,199‭ ‬mm wide‭, ‬and 1,750‭ ‬mm tall‭, ‬with a 3,070‭ ‬mm wheelbase‭. ‬Colour options include white‭, ‬black‭, ‬green‭, ‬and blue‭, ‬all leaning toward a premium aesthetic‭. ‬Our test car wore a particularly elegant gold finish‭.‬

Visibility and comfort from the driver's seat are good‭. ‬The transmission is operated via a neat‭, ‬easy-to-use toggle switch instead of a traditional lever‭. ‬The flat-bottom‭, ‬two-spoke steering wheel with unmarked buttons echoes Tesla's approach but doesn't fully work here‭, ‬and steering adjustability could be better‭. ‬Practical touches include easily accessible child-lock controls on the doors‭. ‬The 12.8-inch AMOLED centre display offers high resolution and responsive Banyan OS‭, ‬though key functions are buried deep in the menus‭. ‬A large 16.3-inch head-up display shows vital information‭, ‬but there's no gimmicky third screen for the front passenger‭, ‬unlike some cheaper Chinese rivals‭.‬

All variants feature soft faux-leather upholstery in line with the eco-friendly ethos‭, ‬with three earth-inspired themes‭: ‬beige‭, ‬brown‭, ‬and black‭. ‬Second-row occupants‭, ‬besides benefiting from comfy captain's chairs‭, ‬also get the‭ ‬“Princess”‭ ‬treatment with business-class-like recline‭. ‬

POWERTRAIN AND ‬PERFORMANCE

This is a fully electric and very powerful SUV‭. ‬A large underfloor 100‭ ‬kWh battery feeds a 180‭ ‬kW permanent-magnet front motor and a 300‭ ‬kW induction rear motor‭, ‬delivering a combined 850‭ ‬Nm of torque‭. ‬Claimed range is 515‭ ‬km‭ (‬NEDC‭), ‬and our test car indicated a respectable 450‭ ‬km‭, ‬though REEVs these days can manage 1,000-plus km‭. ‬The NMC battery supports 240‭ ‬kW DC fast charging‭ (‬400‭ ‬V‭) ‬and 11‭ ‬kW AC home charging‭.‬

The kicker‭, ‬however‭, ‬is the battery-swapping technology‭, ‬which takes just three minutes at NIO Power Swap stations‭, ‬effectively‭ ‬negating hour-long waits‭. ‬The catch‭? ‬For now‭, ‬it's only available at Yas Marina‭.‬

On the move‭, ‬the EL8‭ ‬is quiet‭, ‬comfortable‭, ‬and astonishingly quick‭. ‬Our real-world 0–100‭ ‬km/h run came in just under five seconds‭, ‬close to the supercar-like 4.1-second claim‭, ‬with Sport mode delivering a genuinely slingshot-like surge‭. ‬Braking is handled by orange-painted six-piston front calipers‭, ‬with a claimed 100–0‭ ‬km/h stopping distance of 34.3‭ ‬metres‭. ‬Regenerative braking offers low‭, ‬mid‭, ‬and high modes‭, ‬enabling near one-pedal driving‭.‬

FEATURES AND FUNCTIONALITY

The EL8's coolest feature is NOMI‭, ‬NIO's in-car AI companion‭, ‬a small‭, ‬dashboard-mounted rotating robot with a smiling digital face‭. ‬While charming‭, ‬it only picks up clear voice commands and its functionality is limited‭. ‬Audio is delivered via an excellent 23-speaker 7.1.4‭ ‬system producing up to 2,230‭ ‬watts‭. ‬

The EL8‭ ‬comes with 23‭ ‬safety and driver-assistance features‭, ‬including Autonomous Emergency Braking‭ (‬AEB‭), ‬Lane Departure Warning‭ (‬LDW‭), ‬Active Lane Change‭ (‬ALC‭), ‬and Advanced Parking Assist‭ (‬APA‭). ‬

VERDICT

The 2025 NIO EL8 stands out as a premium luxury EV, defined by its clean, minimalist design inside and out. It offers excellent comfort, space, a well-controlled ride, and strong performance befitting a flagship. That said, minor quality inconsistencies, limited steering adjustability, and lingering scepticism around Chinese luxury pricing do detract from the experience.
