Dubai Civil Defence To Roll Out Smart Uniforms With Life-Saving Medical Chips

The Dubai Civil Defence is looking to incorporate smart chips into its uniforms to help injured firefighters during emergencie, its commander said.

Lieutenant General Rashid Al Matrooshi, Commander in Chief of Dubai Civil Defence, explained that the readable chips would allow healthcare workers to simply scan with their phone and receive information about the firefighter's medical records, which could greatly decrease the time needed to treat injuries.

Because the injuries sustained during firefighting missions are sometimes dire, firefighters may not always be conscious and responsive when admitted to an ambulance or hospital.

This chip-installed uniform would allow a paramedic to check the firefighter's prior medical history and accurately treat them.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Intersec, a global security, safety and fire protection event taking place in the Dubai World Trade Center, Al Matrooshi said that once implemented, DCD would be the first governmental authority to implement such technologies.

“The fireman is always the most vulnerable person in an accident because he's on the front fronlines,” Al Matrooshi said.“We noticed that in some injuries when the fireman is transferred to the ambulance, there's a delay in treatment because they don't know the (firemen's) prior health conditions.”

The DCD started working on the idea over a month ago, and all that is left is for the chips to be installed properly into the uniforms.“The programme is ready, the chip is ready, everything is ready, but we are installing it on the new uniform,” Al Matrooshi said.

The programme, he said, would be distributed for other entities around the world so that they could benefit from it.“We will distribute the programme for free at the international level. Because we don't look for profit or anything. Our only profit is the protection of lives and property. This is our goal,” he added.
