BASL Adopts Lankasign To Digitalise Legal Services
To mark the initiative, several senior BASL officials were formally presented with secure LankaSign digital signature tokens on 5 January 2026 at the BASL premises.
The event was attended by BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya, Secretary Chathura Galhena, Treasurer Pasindu Silva and Assistant Secretary Sarinda Jayawardhene, along with Central Bank of Sri Lanka Assistant Governor and National Certification Authority (NCA) Taskforce Co-Chair Chaminda Bandara, Electronic Transactions Act architect and NCA Taskforce Co-Chair Jayantha Fernando, LankaPay CEO Channa de Silva, Deputy CEO Dinuka Perera, and other representatives from BASL and LankaPay.
Digital signatures are expected to play a pivotal role in legal sector digitalisation by allowing lawyers to securely sign documents electronically from any location. They also support safer sharing, archiving and retrieval of documents, reducing dependence on paper while ensuring authentication, non-repudiation and data integrity, all of which are critical requirements in legal proceedings.
Commenting on the initiative, BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya said the move represents“a significant step towards the digitalisation of the legal profession,” adding that secure digital signatures will improve efficiency, reduce paperwork and build confidence in electronic legal processes.
LankaPay CEO Channa de Silva described BASL's decision as a progressive step toward secure digital communication within the legal community, noting that the partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to a future-ready legal ecosystem.
Representing more than 26,000 legal professionals nationwide, BASL views the introduction of digital signatures as the first phase of a wider rollout that will eventually extend to its full membership. The collaboration with LankaSign reflects BASL's commitment to adopting secure, nationally governed digital solutions that support Sri Lanka's evolving judicial landscape.
