Satellite-tracked turtle stays near Türkiye during second migration

(MENAFN) A loggerhead sea turtle named “Tuba,” fitted with a satellite tracker in western Türkiye, has stayed close to the country’s Aegean coast and the eastern Mediterranean during her second monitored migration, rather than making the long journey to the Adriatic Sea as she did previously.

Tuba, a female estimated to be 25–30 years old, was first tagged with a satellite transmitter in 2019 by the Sea Turtle Research, Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (DEKAMER) in Muğla province, with support from the TUI Care Foundation. She was released from Iztuzu Beach near Dalyan in southwestern Türkiye.

During that initial journey, Tuba became the first sea turtle tracked from Türkiye to reach the Adriatic Sea. After leaving Türkiye, she spent roughly two months off the Marmaris district before reaching Greek waters and then continued along the coasts of Malta, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia, covering approximately 25,000 kilometers (15,534 miles) before arriving in the Adriatic.

Following her return to nest, Tuba was fitted with a new satellite device in August and released back into the sea to monitor her subsequent movements. Current tracking shows that she has remained in nearby Turkish and eastern Mediterranean waters rather than repeating her previous long-distance migration.
