Bluefin Tuna Fetches Record Price at Tokyo Auction
(MENAFN) A saltwater fish was sold for an unprecedented 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million) during the year’s opening auction at Tokyo’s Toyosu market on Monday.
The 243 kilogram (536 pound) bluefin tuna, caught near Oma in Aomori prefecture in northern Japan, was bought by Kiyomura Corp., the Tokyo based operator of the well known sushi chain Sushizanmai.
“The year’s first tuna brings good luck. We hope as many people as possible can enjoy it and feel energized,” stated Kiyomura President Kiyoshi Kimura, according to a news agency.
The fish will be prepared at Sushizanmai’s Tsukiji flagship outlet and distributed to its branches nationwide. Despite the record breaking purchase price, the company confirmed it will serve the tuna to customers at its standard rates.
Officials from the Tokyo metropolitan government noted that this year’s winning bid was the highest since comparable auction records began in 1999.
The event showcased a range of tuna and was characterized by lively exchanges between buyers and sellers. It also attracted many international visitors eager to witness the annual tradition.
Spending heavily at the first auction of the year is a long standing custom, believed to bring prosperity and provide restaurants with a valuable promotional opportunity.
