UAE Influencer Files Legal Case After Massage Centres Use Photos Without Consent

A social media influencer in the UAE is taking legal action after her photos were shared online without permission. The licensed influencer and blogger with over 100,000 followers was surprised to find her images used by two massage centres without her approval.

Her image was posted with insinuating and derogatory captions on the social media platforms of these massage centres. The Indian expat approached several law firms to pursue legal action, but the high fees posed a significant hurdle.

However, given the seriousness of the digital harassment and defamation faced by the woman, Salam Pappinissery, CEO of Yab Legal Services, took on the legal battle at no cost.“Women living alone in the UAE often don't take action when they are targeted on social media, fearing backlash,” he said.“Instead of running away scared, women should take bold steps to fight against injustice. I wanted to set an example for other women in the UAE to come forward when they need legal help.”

A criminal case was registered at the Ajman Police Station through the Ajman Public Prosecution. Following the investigation, the police promptly arrested the opposing party and legal proceedings in the case are currently underway.

Defamation on social media is a severe offence in the UAE. The Federal Decree Law No. 34 of 2021, amended by Law No. 5 of 2024, outlines strict penalties for online insults or defamation, including imprisonment and fines ranging from Dh250,000 to Dh500,000. These penalties can be more severe when the abuse targets public officials or is published through widely followed accounts.

Late last year, authorities in the UAE issued a stern warning to social media users, urging them to refrain from posting or replying to any type of content, whether written, audio, video, or live streams, in a negative, abusive, or defamatory manner.
