44 Candidates Enter Iraq’s Presidency Race
(MENAFN) Iraqi Parliament Speaker Haibat al-Halbousi announced on Monday that a total of 44 individuals have submitted applications to contest the presidency.
“The number of candidates for the position of president has reached 44,” Halbousi stated in remarks conveyed by a state news agency.
He noted that the nomination period would officially close later the same day.
Iraq conducted parliamentary elections on November 11, marking the sixth such vote since the 2003 US-led invasion.
Under Iraq’s political framework, members of parliament hold the responsibility of electing the president and granting confidence to the government.
The country’s long-standing power-sharing arrangement among major political groups traditionally assigns the role of prime minister to a Shiite, the presidency to a Kurd, and the parliamentary speakership to a Sunni.
