ONGC Well Fire: Loud Explosion, Massive Blaze At ONGC In Andhra Pradesh's Konaseema-Here's What Caused It


(MENAFN- Live Mint) A gas pipeline leak at a well in Andhra Pradesh's Dr B R Ambedkar Konaseema district, managed by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC)'s production contractor Deep Industries Ltd, erupted into flames with a loud explosion on Monday.

According to preliminary details, there were no reports of fatalities or injuries, a Maharatna company official said, according to PTI. After the leak and the ensuing fire, senior ONGC officials from Rajahmundry rushed to Mori village, where the blaze occurred at the Mori-5 well, the official added.

The official said the blaze was caused by a gas pipeline leak at the Mori-5 well, which is being operated by Deep Industries Ltd as part of production enhancement activities. "The fire occurred due to a gas pipeline leakage at the Mori-5 well, which is operated by Deep Industries Ltd as part of production enhancement operations," he told PTI.

He added that ONGC officials have arrived at the location to evaluate the situation and determine the cause of the incident.

The Konaseema district administration is also present at the site, coordinating firefighting efforts and implementing safety measures.

A significant gas leak took place in Irusumanda village of Malkipuram mandal, prompting local residents to alert ONGC officials, Balakrishna of the fire department told ANI, noting that the company, together with fire and police teams, is currently working to extinguish the blaze. Villagers are said to be anxious and fearful, they added.

According to reports, Deep Industries Ltd is a Production Enhancement Contractor (PEC) for ONGC and secured a ₹1,402-crore contract in 2024 to carry out production enhancement operations at ONGC's Rajahmundry Asset in Andhra Pradesh.

The company has been managing operations at the Mori-5 well for around a year, the official said.

“Incident of gas leak during the workover operations at Well Mori#5 was informed by the PEC Operator Deep Industries Limited, for the Mori Field in Andhra Pradesh on 5 January 2026. The well is located in a remote area with no human habitation within a radius of approximately 500–600 metres. No injury or loss of life has been reported," it said in a statement.

ONGC stated that the area around the well has been secured and cooling operations have begun, mentioning it has deployed its Crisis Management Teams (CMT and RC MT) and is preparing for well-control measures, including the possibility of capping the well if necessary.

It added that it also coordinated with international well-control specialists and is making arrangements to bring in advanced equipment for well-control and casing-cutting operations, depending on the on-site assessment.

Senior management and technical experts are closely monitoring the situation, with additional equipment being brought in from nearby locations, including Narsapuram, it further said.
