Maduro’s security team suffers heavy losses in US raid— Defense Minister
(MENAFN) Venezuela’s Defense Minister, Vladimir Padrino, stated on Sunday that a significant portion of President Nicolas Maduro’s security team was killed during Saturday’s US military operation.
In a televised address, Padrino accused the US forces involved of “cold-bloodedly murdering a large part of (Maduro's) security team, soldiers, and innocent citizens,” though he did not provide specific casualty figures. He reiterated that Maduro is the country’s “authentic and legitimate leader” and called for the “swift” release of both Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Padrino’s remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump confirmed that his military operation had captured Maduro and Flores and stated that the United States would temporarily “run” Venezuela if necessary. Trump has accused Maduro of drug trafficking and illegitimately holding power, claims Maduro denies. Venezuelan officials in Caracas have demanded their release.
Following the capture, Venezuela’s Supreme Court instructed Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to “immediately” assume the role of acting president, a move supported by the Venezuelan army, Padrino said.
“We fully support the Decree of State of External Emergency throughout the national territory, which was previously signed,” he added, affirming that the armed forces will continue to use “all their available capabilities” to ensure security, maintain internal order, and preserve peace.
Padrino concluded by urging the international community to closely monitor events affecting Venezuela’s sovereignty and Constitution.
