North Korea Launches Tactical Missile Equipped with Cluster Munitions

(MENAFN) North Korea announced on Thursday that it has carried out a test of a tactical ballistic missile fitted with a cluster munition warhead, asserting that the weapon can inflict severe damage over targeted zones, according to reports.

The missile involved in the trial was the surface-to-surface Hwasong-11Ka, and the launch was part of a series of weapons tests described by Pyongyang as “important,” conducted over the period from Monday to Wednesday, according to statements from state media.

Officials stated that the experiment confirmed the missile’s capacity to “reduce to ashes” areas measuring roughly 6.5 to 7 hectares through the use of concentrated explosive force.

The exercise was reportedly aimed at evaluating both the missile’s operational performance and the destructive effectiveness of its cluster-type warhead.

South Korean military authorities also indicated that North Korea had launched several short-range ballistic missiles this week, including projectiles fired from the Wonsan region toward the East Sea. One earlier missile launched from Pyongyang appeared to have failed shortly after takeoff.
