Greenland PM Dismisses US Social Media Flag Image as 'Disrespectful'
(MENAFN) Greenland's leader forcefully dismissed an inflammatory social media image on Sunday that depicted the Arctic territory draped in American colors with the word "SOON" emblazoned across it.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a stern rebuke via Instagram, directly addressing a post shared by Katie Miller, a high-ranking official in the Trump administration and spouse of Stephen Miller, who serves as Deputy Chief of Staff to US President Donald Trump.
"The image shared by Katie Miller, showing our country cloaked in the American flag, changes nothing," Nielsen declared in his statement.
The prime minister emphasized the nation's sovereignty in unequivocal terms: "Our country is not for sale, and our future will not be shaped by debates on social media."
Nielsen characterized the imagery as offensive, insisting that international relationships "must be based on mutual respect and international law."
He warned that "messages that carry symbolism of possession are not the path forward," noting such rhetoric "ignores our status and our rights."
The prime minister underscored Greenland's autonomy, describing it as "a democratic society with self-government, free elections, and strong institutions."
"Our position is clearly anchored in international law and in internationally recognized agreements," Nielsen stated. "It remains firm."
While urging calm, he made clear the offense taken: "There is no reason for panic," he said. "But we do have a good reason to clearly reject this kind of disrespect."
The autonomous Danish territory has emerged as a focal point of American strategic ambitions, given its Arctic positioning and abundant natural resources.
Trump has previously characterized acquiring Greenland as an "absolute necessity" for US economic security, likening it to a "large real estate deal."
Both Denmark and Greenland have categorically dismissed any overtures regarding territorial purchase, firmly asserting Danish sovereignty over the island.
