Iran labels Trump’s warning over protests as “dangerous”

(MENAFN) Iran’s foreign minister has called US President Donald Trump’s warning to intervene if protesters are harmed “reckless and dangerous.” Trump had stated in a social media post that Washington “will come to their rescue” in response to demonstrations over Iran’s economic crisis, adding, “We are locked and loaded and ready to go.”

Abbas Araghchi said Iran’s military is on alert and “know exactly where to aim” if attacked. The week-long protests have already claimed at least eight lives as of Saturday morning. Araghchi also criticized Trump’s comment, referencing domestic unrest in the US and noting that criminal attacks on property cannot be tolerated. He stressed that Iran would “forcefully reject any interference in their internal affairs.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, addressed the protests on Saturday, describing them as partly legitimate but claiming that “rioters” were exploiting the unrest to push anti-government slogans, incited by external enemies. The protests, which began in Tehran over the plummeting value of the rial against the US dollar, have spread to multiple cities and towns, with violent clashes reported between demonstrators and security forces.

State media and human rights groups report several deaths in the west and southwest, including incidents in Malekshahi, Lordegan, Azna, Kouhdasht, Fuladshahr, and Marvdasht.

Reports differ on whether victims were protesters or security personnel, and independent verification is not yet available.

The EU has expressed concern over the violence, urging Tehran to exercise restraint and respect citizens’ rights to peaceful protest, freedom of expression, and assembly. The current unrest is the most widespread since 2022, when protests erupted following the death of Mahsa Amini in custody, though it has not reached the same scale. Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, have pledged to consider protesters’ “legitimate demands.”
