Over 1,500 People Tortured In Russian Detention Chambers In Kherson Region

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) This was reported in a publication by Ukrinform by Oleksii Butenko, head of the department for combating crimes committed in conditions of armed conflict at the Kherson Regional Prosecutor's Office.

"According to the investigation, almost 2,000 people were illegally detained in places of confinement, of whom more than 1,500 were tortured. Currently, almost 800 people have been recognized as victims and interrogated," the article says.

According to Butenko, it has been preliminarily confirmed that the Russians set up 13 torture chambers in the Kherson region. Eleven of them are in the now de-occupied territory, and two are in the territory that remains under temporary occupation. Most of these places were set up in the Kherson district (seven), four in the Beryslav district, and one each in the Henichesk and Kakhovka districts.

Based on the results of the investigations, law enforcement agencies reported 71 persons as suspects in 32 criminal proceedings, and the indictments were sent to court.

It is noted that the occupiers took people to torture chambers not only to“extract” information or force them to cooperate. In some cases, victims or their relatives were forced to pay“ransom” for their freedom – amounts reaching hundreds of thousands of hryvnias.

As reported by Ukrinform, investigators in the Kherson region are investigating a total of 4,500 case of war crimes committed by Russians.
