Zelenskyy Reveals Breakthrough in Peace Talks with U.S.

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Tuesday that a series of draft documents have been prepared following recent high-level discussions between Kyiv and Washington. The talks took place over the weekend in the US, with Zelenskyy announcing the development on the social media platform X.

In his statement, Zelenskyy highlighted a meeting with Ukraine’s lead negotiator Rustem Umerov and General Staff Chief Andrii Hnatov, who provided a progress update after what he described as “productive” engagement with American counterparts.

“They worked productively with envoys of President (Donald) Trump, and several draft documents have now been prepared,” Zelenskyy said. “In particular, these include documents on security guarantees for Ukraine, on recovery, and on a basic framework for ending this war.”

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that these documents aim to address the ongoing nearly four-year Russia-Ukraine conflict and to lay the groundwork for preventing future wars. "Each round of negotiations and meetings contributes to safeguarding Ukraine's interests, and we will continue this work in the same constructive manner,” Zelenskyy stated, also thanking European partners for their ongoing support and collaboration.

Looking ahead, Zelenskyy reiterated the importance of continuing talks with the US, asserting, “It is essential that diplomacy always goes hand in hand with the necessary pressure on Russia and the necessary support for Ukraine.”

Earlier, on Monday evening, Zelenskyy posted another update on X, revealing that Ukraine's negotiating team had concluded talks in Miami and would soon return home. “The core of all documents is ready. The core one. There are certain things we are not prepared to accept. And there are things – of that I am sure – that the Russians are not prepared to accept either," he wrote. He also indicated that the Americans would continue to engage with Russian representatives, noting, "From our side, they have received all the information."

Meanwhile, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff shared on X that Ukraine's delegation had held a series of “productive and constructive” meetings with American and European negotiators in Florida over three days. These talks focused on advancing efforts to end the war.

Witkoff also noted that a separate meeting with US-Ukraine negotiators focused on key documents, including a detailed 20-point plan, as well as security guarantees and strategies for Ukraine's economic recovery.

Later that day, Witkoff announced discussions between the American delegation and Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, aimed at advancing a peace plan championed by President Trump.

These latest rounds of negotiations are part of a broader effort that has been underway since November to refine a peace framework, with the US proposal serving as the foundation for ongoing discussions.
