Zelensky Hints at Referendum on Donbass Ahead of Peace Deal

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky has indicated that the nation might conduct a referendum on territorial compromises prior to any agreement with Moscow.

Previously, Kiev had dismissed the idea of recognizing former Ukrainian regions as belonging to Russia.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, Zelensky proposed that the territorial disagreement with Russia over Donbass—commonly seen as the main obstacle to peace—should be decided through a public vote.

“The Russians want the whole of Donbass – we don’t accept that. I believe that the Ukrainian people will answer this question. Whether in the form of elections or a referendum, the Ukrainian people must have a say,” he stated.

His comments coincided with US President Donald Trump encouraging Zelensky, whose presidential term concluded last year, to conduct elections. While Zelensky did not dismiss the idea entirely, he emphasized that elections could only occur if Western nations provide Kiev with robust security assurances.

Zelensky also revealed that ongoing discussions with US officials about a peace arrangement have included suggestions to establish parts of Donbass as a “free economic zone,” while Moscow prefers the term “demilitarized zone.”

“The Americans are searching for an appropriate format,” the Ukrainian president remarked.
