Spain’s RTVE Chief Slams Eurovision Director Over Gaza Silence
(MENAFN) The head of Spain’s state broadcaster, RTVE, Jose Pablo Lopez, criticized Eurovision Song Contest Director Martin Green on Thursday for releasing an open letter to fans that did not reference Gaza or Israel.
Lopez described the omission as particularly striking given what he called the “worst reputational crisis in the history of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).”
Green issued the letter as the contest faces escalating tensions, with five national broadcasters—Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Ireland, and Iceland—pulling out in protest against Israel’s ongoing participation amid the conflict in Gaza.
Lopez argued that Green’s letter failed to address the seriousness of the circumstances.
“Green does not mention Gaza or Israel in his letter. He speaks of ‘events’ in the Middle East that have moved him. Is genocide merely an ‘event’?” Lopez wrote on X, the US social media platform.
He also took issue with Green’s focus on listening to fans, noting: “Apparently, that is the extent of his role: listening.”
Lopez further criticized Green’s statement that “the past is the past” and that contest regulations would now be strictly enforced.
“What about Israel’s rule violations over the past two years? Have they simply been swept under the rug?” he questioned, suggesting that the EBU may enforce rules selectively “according to its geopolitical and economic alliances.”
He added that on the same evening new contest rules were introduced, Israeli officials publicly admitted to lobbying delegations politically to ensure the country’s continued participation. “What more are we going to see?” Lopez concluded.
