Clashes in Hadramout Leave Dozens of Yemeni Soldiers Dead
(MENAFN) Yemen’s army reported on Saturday that 32 of its officers and soldiers were killed, and 45 others injured earlier this month during an assault by Southern Transitional Council forces in the eastern Hadramout province.
The casualties involved personnel from the First Military Region after confrontations erupted when Southern Transitional Council forces attacked army positions in Wadi Hadramout, according to the Defense Ministry General Staff.
This information was conveyed in a statement carried by a state-run news agency. The fighting took place on Dec. 2.
The clashes began following an assault on sites belonging to the First Military Region, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries on both sides.
The Southern Transitional Council expanded its operations the next day, targeting positions held by units affiliated with the Hadramout Tribal Alliance. They subsequently seized control of several oil fields and increased their influence across the entire wadi (riverbed) and desert regions of Hadramout.
The military characterized the offensive as having "no legal or legitimate justification" and stated it was aimed at destabilizing security in Hadramout, which it described as a relatively stable province.
The statement also warned that the attack threatened liberated areas and undermined the political process and national frameworks.
Additionally, the statement noted that some officers and soldiers remain missing, though no specific number was provided.
The General Staff further accused the attacking forces of killing wounded soldiers and executing detainees, calling these actions "serious violations of local and international law."
