2 Americans Killed In ISIS Attack Near Palmyra, Syria
The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed that the attack occurred on Saturday, December 13, near the city of Palmyra in Homs province. Three other Americans were wounded during the ambush by an armed ISIS operative, who was killed in the ensuing firefight, CENTCOM said.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated the soldiers were conducting a meeting with a key local leader as part of operations against ISIS. The incident is under thorough investigation, and the identities of the victims will be released to family members before public disclosure.
ISIS, though militarily defeated in Syria in 2019, maintains sleeper cells that continue to carry out deadly attacks. The United Nations estimates the group has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters across Syria and Iraq.
The U.S. maintains hundreds of troops in eastern Syria as part of an international coalition against ISIS. American forces provide training to local units and carry out counterterrorism missions across the region, though they remain frequent targets.
Syria has recently restored relations with Western countries and joined the international anti-ISIS coalition. Interim President Ahmad Shaara met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington last month, signaling a historic diplomatic engagement after decades of limited relations.
The attack highlights the persistent threat posed by ISIS's remnants, emphasizing the volatility in areas outside government control. Analysts warn that these attacks could undermine stabilization efforts in central and eastern Syria.
Experts note that U.S. military involvement remains crucial in supporting regional security and combating extremist resurgence, even as diplomatic channels with Syria expand.
