Merz Warns of Putin’s Ambitions to Rebuild Soviet-Era
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Saturday charged that Russian President Vladimir Putin is seeking “to restore the old Soviet Union.”
Addressing the party convention of the co-governing Christian Social Union (CSU) in Munich, Merz stated that Putin aims at “fundamentally changing the borders in Europe and restoring the old Soviet Union within the borders of the old Soviet Union.”
According to the chancellor, this objective reflects a broader strategy to reshape the European order.
Merz further explained that such ambitions are accompanied by a significant military danger to nations that previously “belonged to this empire,” underlining the risks faced by former Soviet-controlled states.
While the chancellor did not explicitly comment on the current diplomatic efforts to bring Russia’s war in Ukraine to an end, he emphasized the necessity of closely examining Russian President Vladimir Putin’s broader approach and long-term intentions.
“If Ukraine falls, he will not stop. And anyone who still believes that he will be satisfied with that should please analyze his strategies, papers, speeches, and appearances closely,” Merz warned, urging skepticism toward assumptions of limited Russian objectives.
Merz also highlighted the importance of sustaining assistance for Ukraine.
He noted that other crucial factors include unity within the European Union, strong cooperation with the United Kingdom, “maintaining the NATO alliance for as long as possible,” and substantial investment in domestic defense capabilities.
In addition, the German leader is scheduled to welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy along with several European heads of state in Berlin next week.
His office announced on Friday that the meeting will focus on recent developments surrounding peace negotiations.
