Drone Strike Hits UN Base in Sudan’s Abyei

(MENAFN) Six peacekeepers from Bangladesh lost their lives and eight more sustained wounds following "a drone attack by terrorists” targeting a United Nations facility in Abyei, southern Sudan, according to a statement released Saturday by the head of Bangladesh’s interim administration.

Muhammad Yunus conveyed deep distress over the deadly assault and emphasized that swift action was being pursued.

He stated: “The United Nations has already been requested to take urgent measures to ensure the highest level of medical treatment and necessary assistance to the injured peacekeepers.”

Previously, the Bangladeshi army reported via a statement shared on the US social media platform Facebook that the attack occurred in Abyei and that clashes in the area had not yet ceased.

At the time of reporting, the UN mission had not issued any immediate response regarding the incident.

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), responsible for peacekeeping duties in the region, has been stationed there since its establishment in 2011.

Abyei, an area rich in oil resources, remains under joint administration by South Sudan and Sudan. Both nations assert claims over the territory, a dispute that has fueled prolonged instability and repeated confrontations over the years.
