United Airlines Flight Diverts After Engine Malfunction
(MENAFN) A United Airlines aircraft was compelled Saturday to reverse course to Washington Dulles International Airport following engine malfunction, with all passengers and crew emerging unscathed, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported.
Flight 803, destined for Tokyo in Japan, experienced engine power loss moments after departure from the airport. The aircraft, transporting 275 passengers and 15 crew members, completed its return without any injuries, confirmed both the FAA and United Airlines.
Media reports indicate the engine complications ignited vegetation near the airport runway. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced via social media that a fragment of the aircraft's engine covering detached and ignited, triggering a brush fire on airport grounds.
"The plane landed safely, and there are no injuries at this time," said Duffy. A representative from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority confirmed fire suppression teams extinguished the blaze.
The FAA announced it will launch an investigation into the incident, which involved a Boeing 777-200 aircraft.
