Two Killed, Nine Injured in U.S. Brown University Shooting

(MENAFN) At least two individuals died and nine sustained injuries Saturday afternoon following a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, campus authorities confirmed.

Both fatalities and eight wounded victims were Brown University students, President Christina Paxson disclosed during a Saturday evening press briefing.

Six injured individuals remain in critical but stable condition, one is listed as critical, and another is stable, local media reported citing hospital sources.

Police indicated the attack unfolded near an academic and research zone on campus where students were completing their second day of final examinations. Law enforcement personnel responded immediately, with investigations continuing.

Authorities described the suspected gunman as a male dressed in black, with an intensive manhunt currently underway.

With the shooter remaining at large, the university maintained campus-wide lockdown protocols, instructing all community members to remain vigilant and shelter in place.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley identified the Barus and Holley building as the shooting location—a facility containing classrooms and laboratory facilities for the university's engineering and physics departments.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Saturday afternoon he had received briefings on the attack and confirmed FBI personnel are deployed on-site.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee stated state police and the state emergency management agency are coordinating with local law enforcement in response to the incident.

Brown University operates as a nonprofit research institution enrolling approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and over 3,000 graduate students, according to institutional data.

Saturday's violence occurred one day before the 13th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut, where a gunman executed 20 first-grade children and six educators in one of America's deadliest school shootings.

Gun violence represents a persistent crisis across American society spanning decades. Through 2025, the nation has witnessed 389 mass shootings, claiming more than 1,100 lives among children and teenagers under age 17—both on campuses and in communities—according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The archive categorizes mass shootings as incidents where four or more individuals, excluding perpetrators, suffer gunshot wounds or death.

The Providence shooting marks the latest in escalating campus violence prompting renewed debate over gun control legislation and campus security protocols. Federal officials have pledged comprehensive investigative resources while Rhode Island authorities coordinate emergency response efforts.
