U.S. Removes Sanctions Targeting Belarusian Potash

(MENAFN) Washington has terminated sanctions targeting Belarus's potash sector, marking a dramatic policy shift announced Saturday by U.S. special envoy for Belarus John Coale.

Coale attributed the decision directly to directives from U.S. President Donald Trump, characterizing the action as a "very good step by the United States for Belarus," according to media reports.

Following talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, the envoy confirmed immediate implementation of the sanctions removal while signaling ongoing negotiations between Washington and Minsk concerning additional restrictive measures still in effect.

In a parallel development responding to the American policy reversal, President Lukashenko has granted clemency to 123 foreign nationals previously convicted under Belarusian statutes for offenses spanning espionage, terrorism and extremist activities.

The presidential press service indicated the pardons represent a goodwill gesture made in response to requests from other heads of state and is based on humanitarian principles and universal human values, aimed at accelerating positive momentum in relations with partner countries and stabilizing the European region.

Belaruskali, the state-controlled potash producer, has faced comprehensive sanctions from Washington and allied nations over recent years. The restrictions compelled Minsk to pivot toward alternative export markets and establish new supply chain infrastructure to circumvent Western trade barriers.

The potash industry represents a critical economic pillar for Belarus, with the country ranking among the world's largest producers of the agricultural fertilizer component. Industry analysts estimate the sanctions previously cost Minsk billions in lost revenue annually while disrupting global fertilizer supplies.
