When one thinks of the UAE, they often equate it to glimmering sky-high towers not lush trees with hot springs and chirping birds.

Al Ain, however, is just that. A haven of dense greens, oases and culture that dates to before the union of the nation itself - a real getaway from the bustling city life.

Here are some of the coolest spots across the city:

1. Jebel Hafit

UAE residents are already well-versed with this peak as it becomes a popular winter hiking and camping spot. Standing at 1,249 metres, the mountain offers stunning views and is the UAE's second-highest peak.

The majestic mountain is a Unesco World Heritage Site and visitors can head to the Jebel Hafit Tombs, where they will come across more than 500 ancient tombs. These 5,000-year-old structures mark the beginning of the Bronze Age in the UAE.

For those who want an adrenaline rush, they can head to the Jebel Hafit Desert Park where they can do some outdoor activities.

2. Green Mubazzarah Park

If you're heading to the Jebel Hafit, make sure you don't skip the Green Mubazzarah Park.

Al Ain is called the Garden City, and, well, this is probably why.

The chilly mountain breeze is a nice break from the regular air-conditioning, and the dense greenery, massive lawns and hot springs are everything you can think of to unwind.

3. Al Ain Oasis

Nature and history come together at this sprawling haven.

With nearly 150,000 date palm trees to walk in the shade of and 100 types of fruit trees, visitors can learn about the rich history of the oasis through interactive displays across the 1,200-hectare area.

History buffs and agriculture enthusiasts can discover the falaj system, an innovative water solutions of the past. These 3,000-year-old channels, created by the Bedouins, remain operational, channelling water from distant mountains to sustain the flourishing greenery of the oasis.

4. Al Jahili Fort

Built in the 1890s on the command of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa, the father of the nation and the first President of the UAE, the fort is a testament to the region's legacy.

The sun-dried mud brick has now undergone preservation and revival.

5. Al Ain Souk

If you want to explore the city like a local, this place is your best bet. This traditional marketplace is a wonderful place to practice your bargaining skills, take some great pictures and perhaps do some shopping.
