Russia reports downing hundreds of Ukrainian drones in overnight assault

(MENAFN) Russia reported on Thursday that its air defenses intercepted almost 300 Ukrainian drones during an overnight assault, causing hundreds of flights at Moscow airports to be canceled, delayed, or rerouted, as stated by reports.

According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry on Telegram, 287 drones were shot down between 11 pm (2000 GMT) Wednesday and 7 am (0400 GMT) Thursday.

The ministry noted that 118 of the drones were intercepted over the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine’s northeastern Chernihiv and Sumy areas. An additional 40 drones were reportedly downed over the Moscow region, with 32 of them reportedly heading toward the capital.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that drones targeting the city had been neutralized throughout the night but did not provide further details on the attacks.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency spokesperson Artem Korenyako announced on Telegram that temporary restrictions were imposed on all Moscow airports, as well as several other airports across the country, including Grozny and Makhachkala. He later stated that the restrictions on arrivals and departures had been lifted.

Based on information from online flight boards, Russian state media reported that Moscow airports experienced cancellations, delays, or diversions affecting 378 flights during the temporary measures.

Ukrainian officials have not commented on Russia’s claims or the attacks, though both countries have recently intensified strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure.
