Merz says new Ukraine peace plan ready for talks with US

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Thursday that Kyiv, together with European partners, has developed a new peace proposal for Ukraine that addresses territorial matters, as stated by reports. The plan is scheduled to be discussed with the United States over the coming weekend.

At a news conference in Berlin, Merz said he, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had reviewed the proposal with US President Donald Trump during a Wednesday phone call.

“The main issue here is what territorial concessions Ukraine is prepared to make. However, this is a question that must be answered primarily by the (...) Ukrainian president and the Ukrainian people, as we also made clear to President Trump," Merz explained.

He added that, if the process moves forward as planned, discussions with the US will take place over the weekend, potentially followed by a meeting in Berlin early next week. “Whether or not the US will participate depends very much on the joint drafting of the documents,” he noted.
