Germany's Merz Reveals Ukraine Peace Deal Tackling Territory Issues
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz revealed Thursday that a fresh peace framework for Ukraine has been drafted by Kyiv and European partners, with land concession terms at its core—and weekend talks with Washington now imminent.
At a Berlin press conference, Merz confirmed that he joined French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in presenting the proposal to US President Donald Trump during a Wednesday call.
"The main issue here is what territorial concessions Ukraine is prepared to make. However, this is a question that must be answered primarily by the (...) Ukrainian president and the Ukrainian people, as we also made clear to President Trump," Merz said.
The German leader outlined an urgent diplomatic sequence: immediate weekend negotiations with American officials, potentially followed by a critical summit in the German capital.
"And if we now proceed with this process as we envisage, there will be talks with the US over the weekend. And then, there may be a meeting here in Berlin at the beginning of next week. Whether or not the US will participate depends very much on the joint drafting of the documents," he added.
The development marks a significant European-driven push to accelerate peace negotiations while maintaining that territorial decisions remain firmly in Ukrainian hands.
