US supports SDF integration with Syrian government for stability

(MENAFN) The United States regards the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into Syrian government forces as a crucial step toward creating a stable and predictable security environment in the region, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM) chief Adm. Brad Cooper.

Speaking virtually at the Middle East Institute’s Syria conference in Washington on Wednesday, Cooper highlighted the March 10 agreement on SDF integration and stated that Washington “stands ready to support” ongoing discussions, including recent engagements in Damascus.

“SDF's successful integration with the Syrian government forces will lead to a more predictable and stable security environment,” he said, referring to the group dominated by the YPG, the Syrian branch of the PKK. Cooper added, “The United States and Syria have a shared interest in preserving peace and stability across the Middle East.”

He outlined three primary CENTCOM objectives: aggressively pursuing ISIS (Daesh) in Syria, supporting the SDF’s integration with state institutions, and coordinating with Damascus on counterterrorism operations. “Cooperation with our Syrian partners is imperative to our collective success,” Cooper emphasized.

The admiral also noted ongoing US collaboration with the Syrian government, including joint operations that destroyed ISIS weapon sites and intercepted arms intended for Hezbollah.

Reflecting on progress over the past year, he highlighted reductions in the Al-Hol and Al-Roj camps’ populations, which have decreased from over 70,000 to 26,000 residents. These camps, run by the YPG/PKK-led SDF in Al-Hasakah province, house families of ISIS fighters from eastern Deir ez-Zor, raising ongoing humanitarian concerns.

The March 10 agreement reaffirmed Syria’s territorial unity and set the framework for the SDF’s integration into state institutions, though Syrian authorities claim the group has yet to meet its obligations. Cooper reaffirmed the US commitment to protecting its forces, countering ISIS, and supporting stability in Syria following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad.
