US Addresses SDF Integration with Syrian Forces
(MENAFN) The United States views the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with Syrian government troops as a crucial step toward establishing a more predictable and stable security situation, according to the head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), Adm. Brad Cooper, on Wednesday.
Speaking remotely at the Washington-based Middle East Institute’s Syria conference, Adm. Cooper highlighted the March 10 agreement for integration and emphasized that Washington “stands ready to support” ongoing discussions, including through recent diplomatic engagements in Damascus.
He remarked, “SDF's successful integration with the Syrian government forces will lead to a more predictable and stable security environment,” referring to the group largely led by the YPG, which is the Syrian branch of the PKK terror organization.
“The United States and Syria have a shared interest in preserving peace and stability across the Middle East,” he added, stressing the mutual benefits of collaboration in the region.
Cooper also outlined three primary priorities for CENTCOM: the “aggressive pursuit” of ISIS (Daesh) in Syria, facilitating the SDF’s integration, and coordinating with Damascus to strengthen counterterrorism measures.
“Cooperation with our Syrian partners is imperative to our collective success,” he noted, underscoring the importance of joint efforts.
He further explained that the US has increasingly worked alongside the Syrian government, including participating in operations that destroyed ISIS weapon caches and intercepted arms that he claimed were intended for the Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah.
