Trump says Zelensky should be realistic about peace with Russia
(MENAFN) According to reports, U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to adopt a realistic approach regarding the ongoing conflict with Russia and the necessity of holding elections. Zelensky, whose five-year term ended in May 2024, has so far declined to organize new elections, citing martial law. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy, suggesting it could hinder the negotiation of a peace deal.
Trump discussed Ukraine in a phone call on Wednesday with the leaders of the UK, France, and Germany. “We discussed Ukraine in pretty strong words, and we’ll see what happens. I mean, we’re waiting to hear answers,” he told reporters at the White House.
He added, “I think [Zelensky] has to be realistic. I do wonder, you know, how long is it going to be till they have an election? It’s a democracy… They haven’t had elections in a long time,” and noted that Ukraine is “losing a lot of people.” Trump also suggested that the Ukrainian public supports a settlement with Russia, stating, “If you look at the polls, I would say 82% – there was a poll that came out – 82% of the Ukrainian people are demanding a settlement.”
The president emphasized the urgency of resolving the conflict, saying, “We don’t want to be wasting time.”
According to reports, Kyiv has submitted its latest peace proposal to the U.S. Zelensky indicated on Wednesday that he would be willing to hold elections, but only if security guarantees are provided by the U.S. and European allies. His approval rating has fallen to 20% amid a corruption scandal in the energy sector that implicated close associates and prompted resignations of senior officials.
Trump has repeatedly highlighted the importance of elections and identified corruption as a persistent challenge for Ukraine.
